In March 2010 The Whipps released their debut CD Ghettobillies. Fans embraced the concept CD a collection of eight native country songs opening with a low-fi radio tuning in to The Whipps make believe radio station. A radio station where rock mixes in with country and hip hop. You hear a blend of traditional instruments like banjo dobro and mandolin with newer sounds. The Whipps like pushing their music into hybrid territory. Weve got our own thing going so at practice one night we named it hick hop says Don Hanshaw The Whipps lead singer. When I talk about our style mixing country and rock with a little hip hop I get an immediate reaction. The younger fans get excited and say those are their favorite styles of music. The older fans get curious. Both reactions are...what artists want to happen explains guitarist Larry Collinsworth. We like to push our music in new directions. Country music came from the hills of Kentucky and Tennessee and a tradition of sharing styles from blues to bluegrass.
