Rook is an introspective native rock trio formed in Phoenix Arizona. In 2003 lead singer and guitarist Lyman Smith and drummer Mark Tillman began playing together incorporating various musicians until adding their third and final member bassist Erik Koller and officially forming the band Rook. Spawned from the post-punk and grunge scene Rook crafts energetic and melodic three-minute pop singles with Smith’s cryptic and disaffected lyrics touching on themes such as unrequited love social alienation and taking on cultural mores. Their songs and Smith’s vocals are by turns soft and then aggressive with a stop-start dynamic and jagged guitars reflective of tunesmiths like the Pixies Nirvana and Sonic Youth. In late 2010 Rook recorded several demo songs: Candy Floss Grey to Black Once More Carousel Broken Bones Like the Movies and Bipolaroid. They are currently recording their debut full-length album to be released later this year.
