D.A.B.
When you talk about D.A.B.(David Allen Bray) only one word can truly describe his demeanor: RAW. No cut is how this 24 year old artist producer and engineer comes off in and out of the studio. Bred straight from the eastside of Cleveland Ohio D.A.s unearthly charisma and blunt character shines from his loins into his music and into your speakers like the hot summer beach sand in California. But how he would say it 15 years is enough time to develop a talent as distinct as his. I just love the music cut and dry. Life is good you gotta enjoy it. Music is how i enjoy life.
Born April 19th 1985 to Richard and Brenda Bray it was clear from the beginning that this young man everybody called David was remarkably different. Growing up running the streets of the north-east side it was easy to get into trouble. And like many of the youth from this environment D.A. is no stranger to it. He began a juvenile rap sheet that spread over five years from robbery charges to violent assaults to just about any and everything young kids do in the neighborhood. And like the rest he had a profound love for the release of stress and aggression over rythym: Rap.
He began writing raps at the age of eight and quickly progressed into one of the better MCs from his area. Hanging out at the local parks and house parties he honed his skills with and against any and all comers willing to step up to the stage. By age 14 he was producing music in his mothers basement using merely a computer and digital software. By the time he ped out of school in 2001 he was stepping into his own as a young powerhouse ready to hit the recording studio.
In 2004 D.A.B. produced for local hitmaker A-Gully on the successful A Rose In The Cement which received good reviews in Ohio New York and Pennsylvania. The tracks Uh Huh and Welcome to the Land still resonate in the streets today. In 2005 he began working on his first underground release titled A Cut Above The Rest a mix CD devoted to MCing over industry beats and some of his own material. The project recieved great feedback and the public demanded a full length project of original music. But this release wouldnt come without serious sweat and blood and a few setbacks along the way.
In 2006 D.A.B. became a first time father to a girl rightly named Keshyra born February 1st. Still a struggling musician but eager to overcome the plagues of the streets he began working jobs and continuing his producing and recording. Being a young father isnt easy especially an uneducated one. In 2007 a baby boy named D.A.B. Jr. was born April 1st and the joy and stress of young parenthood quickly set in. In 2008 D.A. began his stage career performing in some of Clevelands local showcases and popular venues. But with no real money and a fading local music support he made up his mind that it was time to think big. REAL big.
With no hometown support but a studio and indie company owned by his cousin Vernon Tyus D.A. turned to the internet to try and take Gutta Productions to the next level. By 2009 a second son named Dinari was born and he was back in the studio working on new music and developing new talent. This is a tricky business. You have to make a lot of noise and often and hope that people will respond to you and your music in a positive way. This is not a business for the faint of heart or the weak in spirit. Everyday is a grind and a burn out is always possible. Finding a balance is very difficult but its the only way. You have to deal with all the necessaries the good and the evil. But thats life as we all know in some form or fashion.
There seems to be no end to his story spanning 15 years in music and a lifetime of lessons to teach to the youth of younger generations. D.A. still lives in Cleveland working on music and waiting for his time to shine on the world. But with his talent and dedication you wont have to wait much longer. I wont leave until I can take my city with me or I can bring the world back. Cleveland has lot to offer the music world its just a very tough market here. Probably the toughest market out there. If youre a native of the 2-1 you know exactly what I mean. If youre on the outside looking in its difficult to understand.
Cleveland is an older city of the northeast U.S. and opportunities there have long since drifted toward newer more modern areas of the country. Manufacturing is an outdated industry and entertainment flourishes in more vibrant territory. Crime is still everpresent in the local communities though and doesnt look to be slowing down anytime soon. With the economy in shambles and Cleveland being one of the poorest cities in the nation making it out seems almost impossible. But with young motivated individuals like David Allen Bray around we wont be singing Goodbye to the Land anytime in the near future.
